3 Beaches You Must Visit in Zakynthos
The island of Zakynthos, the third largest of the Ionian Islands, is renowned for its stunning beaches with turquoise waters and white sands, including Agios Nikolaos, Alykes, and Kalamaki, where endangered Caretta-Caretta sea turtles nest. Easily accessible by ferry from Kyllini and by air from Athens, Zakynthos also offers rich history, lush landscapes, and excellent cuisine, making it a perfect holiday destination.
Zakynthos: The Flower of the East
Zakynthos is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea and the second in population. Known as the "Flower of the East" (Fiore di Levante), it is famous for its history, as the island's name is mentioned in Homer's Iliad, for the contrast of its green landscapes with white cliffs, and of course, for its beautiful beaches with turquoise waters and white sands, some of which are home to the endangered Caretta-Caretta sea turtles. Here are 3 beaches you must visit when in Zakynthos!
Agios Nikolaos Beach
Located south on the Vasilikos Peninsula, the white sand and shallow turquoise waters of this beach will enchant you! Family-friendly and ideal for water sports enthusiasts, the organized beach offers options for everyone. The beach bars with umbrellas and sunbeds, as well as the restaurants, complete the picture.
Alykes Beach
Another beach ideal for children, with white sand and clear, shallow waters, Alykes Beach is considered one of the best in Zakynthos. Located on the northern side of the island, it is fully organized with many beach bars offering umbrellas and sunbeds, yet there is also space for those who prefer to bring their own equipment. There is also a wide range of water sports, as well as restaurants and tavernas, while behind the beach you will find the center of Alykes, where there are shops of all kinds.
Kalamaki Beach
One of the most famous beaches on the island, Kalamaki has turquoise waters and sand closer to the color of gold. The protected beach has a limited number of shops and corresponding umbrellas and sunbeds. Free space is limited as there are many nests of the Caretta-Caretta turtle on the beach. This means that as sunset approaches, the chances of seeing a baby turtle emerge from the sand and head to the water increase, something that will surely move you. It is important to note that because the beach is protected, staying on the beach is prohibited after sunset.
