Creta

• Periodo Minoico: Il periodo Minoico va dal 2600 a.C. al 1100 a.C. e può essere suddiviso in tre periodi: il Periodo Minoico Antico dal 2600 a.C. al 2000 a.C., il Periodo Minoico Medio dal 2000 a.C. al 1580 a.C., e il Periodo Minoico Tardo dal 1580 a.C. al 1100 a.C. Il nome della prima civiltà europea deriva dal re Minosse, il leggendario sovrano di Creta.
• Era Bizantina (330-1204 / secolo X d.C.): Creta era una provincia autonoma dell'Impero Bizantino, con Gortyna come centro amministrativo e religioso. Durante questo periodo, la pirateria diminuì e il commercio prosperò, permettendo la ricostruzione dei templi. Il Cristianesimo arrivò presto con la visita dell'Apostolo Paolo nel 63 d.C. Il suo discepolo Tito riuscì a diffonderlo in tutta l'isola.
• Dominazione Veneziana (1204-1669 d.C.): Quando i Crociati conquistarono Costantinopoli nel 1204, Creta fu venduta ai Veneziani. I Genovesi tentarono di mantenere il controllo, ma Venezia prevalse. Molti nuovi edifici furono costruiti a Heraklion durante questo periodo, tra cui il Palazzo dei Duchi, la Basilica di San Marco e la Loggia. Dopo la caduta di Costantinopoli ai Turchi nel 1453, molti nobili greci si trasferirono a Creta. Il Monastero di Santa Caterina divenne un centro di cultura, teologia, filosofia, musica e letteratura.
• Dominazione Ottomana (1669-1898): Il dominio turco dell'isola fu forse il periodo più oscuro della sua esistenza. Circa 60.000 uomini catturarono Chania nel 1645, Rethymno nel 1646 e tutta l'isola tranne Heraklion entro la fine del 1648. Il 27 settembre 1669, la città cadde finalmente in mano ai Turchi dopo un assedio che costò 117.000 vite turche e 30.000 cretesi e veneziani. Nel 1897, le forze greche e i volontari raggiunsero Creta e iniziarono a liberare l'isola con l'intenzione di unirla al resto della Grecia.
• Creta Autonoma - Periodo Moderno: Le battaglie cessarono nel 1898 dopo il massacro avvenuto a Heraklion. Le Grandi Potenze - Gran Bretagna, Francia e Russia - riconobbero il "Stato Cretese" autonomo sotto il governo del Principe Giorgio, con l'unione eventuale con la Grecia. La Rivoluzione Cretese a Theriso nel 1913 portò all'unificazione di Creta con la Grecia.
• 1941-1945 d.C.: I Cretesi sono rinomati per la loro resistenza contro i tedeschi durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Nel maggio 1941, migliaia di paracadutisti tedeschi sbarcarono sull'isola e incontrarono una resistenza feroce.

• Frangokastello: È una bellissima meta a Creta, situata nel comune di Sfakia nel sud-ovest dell'isola. Questa spiaggia è unica, con il castello che fa da sfondo straordinario. Le acque sono molto basse, rendendola ideale per famiglie e bambini.
• Glyka Nera: Situata a Sfakia, è raggiungibile sia in barca da Loutro sia tramite il sentiero escursionistico europeo E4. Il paesaggio durante la discesa è impressionante, con scogliere ripide che si ergono sopra la riva. Le acque sono cristalline, e la taverna situata su una roccia nel mare è notevole.
• Spiaggia di Dymata: Situata a 7 chilometri a est di Sougia, è una spiaggia isolata con un paesaggio drammatico e scogliere uniche formate dalle onde del mare. Nella Foresta di Cedri, nelle spiagge sud-occidentali di Creta, troverai una spiaggia dal carattere tropicale, con alberi di cedro e sabbia che ricorda le rive tropicali.
• Elafonisi: La spiaggia si trova accanto alla Foresta di Cedri e vanta acque turchesi, sabbia rosa e un paesaggio mozzafiato. Questa spiaggia ha acquisito grande popolarità ed è considerata un paradiso terrestre.
• Altre bellissime spiagge di Creta: includono Balos con il suo Castello di Gramvousa, Falassarna con le sue sabbie bianche e rosse, la Spiaggia di Agia Anna a Gavdos con le sue acque turchesi e il suo carattere africano unico, la Spiaggia di Ammoudi ad Agios Pavlos con le sue impressionanti dune di sabbia e la Spiaggia di Souda a Plakias con la brezza rinfrescante che spesso soffia sulla riva. Infine, la Spiaggia di Triopetra ad Asterousia si distingue con le sue acque cristalline e i piccoli ciottoli.
