Ithaca: 3 Beaches You Must Visit

Ithaca: 3 Beaches You Must Visit

Ithaca, known for its azure waters and white pebble beaches, is an island rich in natural beauty and historical heritage. Its beaches are small, with clear, transparent waters and trees that reach close to the sea. Three of its best beaches are Sarakiniko, with its deep blue waters and romantic scenery, Gidaki, known as the "turquoise diamond" of Ithaca, and Filiatro, the island's most popular and cosmopolitan beach.

Ithaca a mythical island

Ithaca: The island with azure waters and white pebble beaches. The island with caves, lush coves, and countless archaeological treasures. The historic island of Odysseus and Penelope needs no special introduction. Sandy beaches are not common on Ithaca. Instead, most beaches are small, with white pebbles and crystal-clear waters, with trees almost reaching the sea. Let's explore 3 of the best beaches in Ithaca!

Sarakiniko Beach

Located 4 kilometers from Vathy, Sarakiniko Beach has stunningly clear, blue waters and pebbles. The beach is divided into two parts by a path. In the first part, many boats anchor, which can be bothersome to some visitors, leading them to choose the second part for swimming. Nearby, there is a camping area, but it is not so close as to disturb those on the beach. The combination of clear water over white pebbles and the fishing boats with fishermen working on their nets adds to the romantic atmosphere, rightfully placing it in our top 3.

Gidaki Beach

Many describe it as the "turquoise diamond" of Ithaca, and it is considered one of the best beaches in Greece. Located on the southern side of the island, it is not accessible by car. Therefore, you have two options: the first is by boat from Vathy, and the second is a 20 to 30-minute hike along a path leading to the beach, which is why it got its name. The second option is not recommended for young children, but the view from the path is unforgettable. It ranks second in our top 3 because, although access is not the easiest, the beach is truly incredible in every other aspect!

Filiatro Beach

The most popular and cosmopolitan beach on the island, justifiably at number 1. Organized, with crystal-clear water and pebbles, you are almost certain to find what you need. About 15 minutes from Vathy and accessible by car, the beach remains calm regardless of the wind. On the beach, there are many shops, as well as sunbeds with umbrellas and space for those who prefer to bring their own equipment. Because it is the most popular beach on the island, you may need to park your car a little further away and walk, something you certainly won't regret!

Ferry connection

Ithaca is connected by ferry to Patras, Kefalonia, Lefkada, Kyllini, and Astakos in Aetolia-Acarnania. It is truly one of the most beautiful islands in the Ionian Sea and definitely worth a visit, including the top 3 beaches we mentioned above!
