History of Igoumenitsa

Igoumenitsa is relatively new, as it was rebuilt after World War II. During the period of Ottoman rule, it was known as "Grava." In 1913, it was liberated from the Turks and later became the capital of Thesprotia prefecture. Archaeological remains have been found in the area indicating the presence of prehistoric humans. During the Bronze Age, it elonged to the Thesprotians, and the Odyssey mentions some events that took place in the region.

During Roman rule, the settlement of Ladochoriou was established, which was quite extensive with wealthy installations. In the Middle Ages, Thesprotia suffered from raids by various nations. During Venetian rule, the Venetians showed interest in the region. In the 20th century, the city developed and expanded, new services were established, and ferry routes connecting the city to other areas were created.
